Archie Mclean

Journalism Professor

Archie McLean is an assistant professor of journalism at Mount Royal University where he teaches multimedia reporting and is a faculty advisor for the Calgary Journal.

Before coming to Calgary, Archie was the managing editor for CBC North in Yellowknife. There, he led a team of journalists covering three territories and one province, across four time zones and 10 languages on radio, TV and digital media. During his tenure, his team was nominated for a Michener Award and the Canadian Journalism Foundation digital innovation award.

Archie also worked for nearly a decade as a reporter and editor at the Edmonton Journal, writing mostly about politics and public affairs. In 2009, he spent six weeks covering Canada's war in Afghanistan for Canwest News Service.

Archie taught journalism and communications at MacEwan University in Edmonton. While serving as chair of the journalism department, he and his students launched a hyperlocal news website called West Edmonton Local.

He holds a Master of Science in journalism from Columbia University in New York and a Bachelor of Science in biology and environmental studies from the University of Victoria. His current research interests include: Indigenous language broadcasting; emerging business models for news and the intersection of politics, media and technology.
